Old Man's C, D and E Rankings

Class C Rankings 5/2/2011

1. TG/TPS/Elite
I got to watch this team play a few games this weekend and I am very impressed! They are playing with a ton of confidence right now and seem to have great team chemistry. They have won every tournament they have played in so far this year. That earns them the top spot in my rankings this week.

2. P&P 333/ Suburban/ Larry’s Tire/ CMT
The Plumbers are legit… They manhandled every team not named TG this weekend. They had the highest scoring average (19/game) and run differential (8.4/ game) in the tournament. In their first loss defense let them down a little bit, just enough to open the door for a hot TG team to put it on them. Their second loss was a tight back & forth game that could have gone either way. If they are playing a lot of USSSA, it could be a long summer for the other teams in C.

3. Linedrive/ Triple SSS Sportscards
They are WAAAAAY better than they showed this weekend. They did not play well in the field and hit far too many homeruns for outs. Just chalk it up to a bad tournament and move on. Don’t expect it to happen too often.

4. Great Lakes Express
They had a decent weekend, especially since they were pretty short-handed. They beat the teams they were supposed to, lost to two better teams IMO. Not having Barrett hurts them against the top teams.

5.Mayhem/Wolf-Hulbert/DC Realties
Another good team that under achieved this weekend. Even though they were missing a few guys, they had a pretty good draw not having to play any of the C teams in the 1st two rounds. Don’t count them out, they will be better next time, count on it.

Surprise team of the week
TG/TPS/Elite
Undefeated tournament champions.

Disappointing team of the week
Mayhem/ Wolf-Hulbert/ DC Realties
Both loses coming to D teams.

Class D Rankings 5/2/2011

1. Mush Reloaded/ Sinister
They are as good as advertised. Highest finishing D team, beating the Pre-season #1 C team along the way.  Their only losses coming from the tournament champions and runners up. I feel they are still clearly the team to beat in D.

2. Detroit Drama
My pre-season rankings had them as a question mark. Well they answered some of my questions this weekend. Looks like they are going to give D a real shot this year. Going 3-2 and beating Mayhem along the way should put any rumors about them petitioning to move down to bed.

3. D-Nation
This pick may raise a few eyebrows, but two solid weekends in a row have moved them into my top 5. They scored solid victories against DO and Korody and played Mayhem very tough. In my pre-season rankings I said that I felt they didn’t have enough talent to compete in D, but after watching them play this weekend, I may have been mistaken.

4. Detroit Phillies/ Xtreme/ Sports 55
Tough draw this weekend playing the hottest C team in the state right out of the gate. I don’t expect them to have many more 1-2 weekends this year.

5. DO/ Mushtube.com
They scored a lot of runs in the Spring States (18.6). The problem is, they gave up a ton of runs too (23.6). I expect this team to be better than they were this weekend. Their defense is better than it played, but pitching is a big question mark right now.

Surprise team of the week
D-Nation
This one’s a no brainer. I think they surprised everyone this weekend, including themselves.

Disappointing team of the week
DO/ Mushtube.com
Highest runs allowed average in the tournament. (23.6/game)

Class E Ranking 5/2/2011

1. Trust/ Wicked Sports/ Mario
No surprise here. They were just about everyone’s pick going in and they took care of business. They weren’t as dominant as they could have been winning several close, low scoring games against Rock Bottom and MC Push. But as they say, a win is a win.

2. Repo Monkey
I was very impressed with the way these guys played this weekend given the circumstances. It was obvious that they were playing with heavy hearts, but they pressed on and had a very good showing. I see now that I may have under rated them a bit in my pre-season rankings. They may not have beaten Trust’s  Varsity squad, but they gave them all they wanted Saturday night losing in extra innings.

3. MC Push/ Clark Bldg Co.
These guys can play some defense. Whether you like Dave Tack or not, you have to respect the fact that he is one of the best pitchers in class E. If this team could have kept the ball in the park, they had a legit shot at winning. Home runs really hurt them.

4. Trust Sports
A nice showing for these guys. Defense really let them down in the Repo game, but was solid otherwise. If they can score more runs for Bobby, they will stay in the top 5.

5. (tie)
Irish Swagger/ Worth
After losing their first game and squeaking one a close one in their second game, they went on an impressive run before running out of gas late Saturday night against MC Push.

Motor City Cocks/ Biggs Bar
Just like Irish Swagger, they lost their first game and rattled off 4 straight wins in the loser’s bracket (Including a win over the team that put them there) before losing a tight, low scoring game to Trust Sports.

Surprise team of the week

Repo Monkey
For them to play as well as they did after getting the devastating news about Keyes is just amazing. Jason Mullins dedicating his All-Tournament award to him was all class. The huddle with Trust and Repo after the finals was also a very touching moment. Mike will certainly be missed by everyone.

Disappointing team of the week

Dooley’s/ Pole Position/ LV Financial
This team was rated #1 or #2 in everyone’s pre-season rankings. Them going 0-2 and only scoring 7 runs in the process has a lot of people scratching their heads. This team is too talented for this kind of showing. I expect to see them bounce back next time out.
